Thoughts on the Apple iPad 2

Behold, it is the Apple iPad 2!

I’m not sure, was the Apple iPad 2 announced yesterday? Jokes – I was up at 5am Sydney time to catch Engadget’s liveblog, and then had to wade through the squillions of subsequent tweets and stories about it. Okayyy, there’s a new iPad, we get it!

I agree with most of the other commentators that it’s really more of an iPad 1.5 than a 2 – refining what’s already there rather than offering anything radically new. Faster dual-processor, better graphics, thinner, lighter, and now with front and back cameras and available in black or white. I’m not too fussed about the new cameras, as I’ve never used FaceTime on my iPhone 4, hardly ever use the rear camera for photos or video (I prefer to use dedicated cameras for that). Nor are the performance improvements all that interesting. I guess the main thing I like about it is that it’s lighter. Enough to warrant me buying one when they’re released in Australia on March 25? Nah. I’m sure I’ll want to, but with my finances the way they are at the moment, I really can’t justify it.

The iPad 2 is a nice evolutionary update, but it doesn’t have the things that I wanted, which was a memory card slot, more internal storage, and a USB OTG port for connecting accessories and flash drives. I would’ve loved to have seen iOS 5 as well, with an overhaul to the homescreen to make better use of all that space – I think the iPad looks mega dorky using the same icon-based interface that the iPhone uses. Where are my widgets and custom shortcuts? Especially now that the iPad 2 would be able to easily support it with its enhanced processor and graphics engine. I think I’ll save my money for one of the upcoming Honeycomb Android tablets – probably the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

My iPhone 4 running iOS 4.2.1 is now jailbroken!

Seems like I’m on a hacking roll lately! I’ve been giving some serious thought to loading a custom ROM on my Galaxy Tab, as it could do with a bit of a performance boost, but for today, I’ve settled for jailbreaking my iPhone 4.

An untethered jailbreak for those using iOS 4.2.1 is finally available using greenpois0n on Mac, and as it’s been awhile since I’ve had a jailbroken iPhone, I thought it would be a good chance to get reacquainted with jailbreak apps. In case you didn’t know, an untethered jailbreak is basically a full jailbreak – a tethered jailbreak for 4.2.1 has been available previously, but if the battery on your iPhone dies, you have to reboot the iPhone with the assistance of the jailbreak utility on your computer, otherwise it just sits at the iTunes screen and you can’t use it. I’ve had a tethered jailbreak before, and it’s a massive PITA.

Redmond Pie has a great walkthrough for using the greenpois0n jailbreak. Note: an unlock for 4.2.1 isn’t available yet, so if your iPhone is carrier-locked to a particular network, it will still be locked after you jailbreak it. Good thing mine is unlocked, although I had to pay a ridiculous $150 unlocking fee to Telstra to get this done. Naturally, I did this right before Telstra canned the unlock fee and started doing it for free! C’ est la vie!

Running greepois0n on my Mac

Lots of white text on a black background - looking good!

Huzzah! The greenpois0n logo!

I got a bit worried when it got stuck on the greenpois0n logo, but then I pressed the home button, and it changed to the Apple logo, and finally booted into the homescreen – phew! Next step was to run Loader so I could get Cydia installed – the latter is basically the jailbreak app store equivalent. I had to open Loader a few times before it showed a link to download Cydia, and once that showed, I had to hit the Cydia link a few times before it downloaded – since greenpois0n has just been released, I imagine the servers are getting hammered big time all over the world by eager little haXXors such as myself :P

Just make sure you don’t let your iPhone go to sleep while Cydia is downloading, as it will stop the download and you’ll have to go through the whole ‘reloading Loader/Cydia link’ process again! I was about 31% through the download the first time when I let it go to sleep – d’oh!

Finally!

I haz Cydia!

Greenpois0n isn’t as easy to use as the last untethered jailbreak: jailbreakme, which was the all-time easiest jailbreak EVER as you could do it directly on the iPhone using Safari. But it’s relatively easy all the same. Flush with success from my iPhone jailbreak, I went ahead and did it on my iPad as well :)

I did a search on Google to find the top jailbreak apps, and found this link. Winterboard will definitely be my first port of call! I love the HTC Sense theme you can get to make the iPhone look more like Android – hilarious! Here’s another link to some good jailbreak apps. (Edit: my bad, the theme below is actually a HTC Windows Mobile 6.5 phone!)

Google Goggles now solves Sudoku puzzles for you!

Wow, this is insane! The latest update for Google Goggles can apparently solve Sudoku puzzles for you! I haven’t tried it yet myself, but wow!

I’ve only been playing Sudoku since last month. I was always curious about the game, but never felt curious enough to learn how to play it. That changed during Christmas when my mum mentioned that a friend of hers had recommended that she play it, and she wanted me to install a Sudoku game on her iPad and teach her to play it.

That was all it really took for me to get hooked. It’s not the sort of game that you can play for hours on end, but it’s a great way to suck up a stray half an hour whenever one presents itself :) I use the Astraware Sudoku on my iPad, but I’m still a rookie – I haven’t looked into any of the tricks you can use to work out a number when there aren’t any ones available that you can cancel out.

The new update is available for Android and iPhone.
